THE NIGHT BEFORE

This is your story (I hope not literally).

You wake up one morning, you're late for work, and you can't - no matter how much you try - remember the night before.

All you know is... you really need some coffee. And your flat furniture seems... different? Strange?

...

Weird?

This game is done on Bitsy (https://bitsy.org/), a fantastic Pixel Art narrative story making tool, as part of my "Approaches to Play" lecture at Goldsmiths University.

The Night Before is my attempt at narrative humor, and is inspired by past movies and games I have played (The Big Lebowski - Joel & Ethan Coen, Inherent Vice - Paul Thomas Anderson/Thomas Pynchon, Donnie Darko - Richard Kelly, Hotline Miami - Jonatan Söderström), mixed in with the question: what if the whiskey bottles could speak in Lee Hazlewood's similarly titled (but much more depressing) song?

If you read this before playing, this should give you a better insight on what you're about to go through.

If you read this after playing, well, maybe this explains a bit more about the game.

And finally, meet Beka, the bestest of all the coffee machines and the centerpiece of this story. Although please note that The Night Before is not an accurate representation of her usual personality (only when she gets really, really grumpy).

Thanks for playing!
